When renovating a house, we often start with the most important or most frequently used room – the living room, the kitchen, and the primary bedroom. There is one room that usually gets pushed to the bottom of the list and even sometimes forgotten about – the spare room. You might only realize what a state it is in when you make plans for someone to come over, and then it is a crazy rush to get it looking presentable. If you need some help on how you can quickly and cheaply spruce up that spare bedroom, here are our top tips.
Wall Art
Decorating the walls is a great way to get a bare room to look more put together. You can go for sophisticated artwork or get some beautiful canvas prints from Hello Canvas with all your favorite photos. If you want to go for something a little more interesting, you can try a few alternative ideas, such as movie posters, neon lighting, hats, or even a cool succulent wall planter. Wall décor can serve as a placeholder if you do not have the time to fully redecorate the room with paint and new pieces of furniture.
Shelving
Shelves serve two purposes: décor and storage. You can use the spare room to store all your books while also making the room look more interesting and giving your guests something to do before they settle down to sleep. You could build a cheap bookcase or install some floating shelves on the wall – floating shelves also help to spruce up a blank wall space. You can fill shelves with cute nick knacks, hanging plants, or framed photos. Shelving provides endless opportunities for creativity.
Second-hand or Vintage Furniture
If you do not want to spend a lot of money on furnishing a spare room, then get yourself down to your nearest thrift shop or browse Facebook marketplace for some incredible second-hand pieces. There are some amazing, preloved items online at massively reduced prices. Second-hand furniture will give your spare bedroom some character and make it look like you spent a lot more time and effort on it than you did.
Have Some Fun
The spare room gives you a place where you can really let your creative juices flow. When decorating rooms like the living room, you will likely want to keep it practical and more understated so it can be enjoyed by everyone. A spare bedroom can be anything you want it to be because guests will only be staying there a few nights at a time.
You could have a theme for the décor, like industrial or log cabin chic, or you could go all out on the color and make it a beautiful rainbow of different shades and hues. If you really want to, you could have no theme or consistency throughout the room! Sometimes we see a piece we love but find that it does not fit with the décor in any of our rooms. Well, why not stick it in the spare room? A mismatched, hectic-looking room can work really well.
