As we welcome spring, we look over the fleeting fashion season and towards the potential in forthcoming trends it has left behind. It would appear that the fall-winter 2017 runways have declared the beret as a staple item this season.

Fashion brands challenge the beret’s perceived connotations, which conjure imagery of a hackneyed French novelty, a 1960s Bardot-esque screen siren or an Argentinian revolutionary. Whether one wears it in the tilt of Jean-Paul Sartre, the backwards perch of Picasso or a horizontal balance, the fall runways have showcased a broad range within the beret spectrum.
Moschino’s Embellished Take on the Beret
As a provocative headpiece, the beret has historically been synonymous with societal situations. It seems its fashion ascent has been established at a time when we are seeing a rise in politically charged runway shows. Moschino’s was amongst the collections reflective of current political crises. Designer Jeremy Scott pays homage to the radicalness of the punks, showcasing a series of berets embellished with metal buttons, pop tabs, belt buckles and key chains.
The Beret: Leather’s in Vogue at Prada
The impact of the 70s era became the defining influence for Prada’s fall-winter 2017 collection, as Miuccia Prada stated that the decade was “a very important moment for protest, for rights, for humanity…that could be very necessary now.” We see a collection immersed in leather and corduroy. The texture rich range is accented by oversized warm hued berets, which complemented several looks.
Louis Vuitton Applies Its Monogram to the Beret
In its collaboration with skate label Supreme, French fashion house Louis Vuitton incorporates its classic leather monogram in the trims of its berets, following the Trunk stamp berets of its fall-winter 2016 show. On the other hand, designer Gosha Rubchinskiy accessorized his collection of sportswear and tailored silhouettes with leather trimmed military berets in an assortment of colors.
Missoni Goes Rugged for Outdoors Spin on Beret
Finally, Missoni remains loyal to the power of pattern; showcasing berets, which conformed to its colorful design aesthetic of stripes and jacquard. It would seem that the fall-winter 2017 runways have proven that the visual token of French style, can easily be adapted to an individualistic appeal. From dominating the men’s runways and Christian Dior’s military-esque womenswear show last week, to being adorned with the Stüssy logo on street-style blogs, the beret has established itself, as the season’s must-have item.
