Tiffany & Co. was founded in New York in 1837 by Charles Lewis Tiffany and John B. Young. Their first shop sold stationery and fancy goods, establishing a business that would develop into an American jewelry house. Charles Tiffany assumed control in 1853, adopting the name that remains above its stores.
Silver and diamonds helped establish the firm’s reputation. The Tiffany Setting, introduced in 1886, raised a diamond above its band using six prongs, giving the engagement ring a widely recognized form. The house’s blue packaging became another enduring identifier, tying the object to the ceremony of receiving it.
Designers expanded that vocabulary across generations. Jean Schlumberger joined in 1956, bringing imaginative interpretations of birds and botanical forms. Elsa Peretti, who arrived in 1974, developed sculptural jewelry suited to daily wear. Their work helped make an individual designer’s point of view part of Tiffany’s identity, alongside its traditions of gem selection and metalwork.
LVMH completed its acquisition in 2021. Under chief artistic officer Nathalie Verdeille, Tiffany has continued to develop its jewelry collections while returning to its design archive. For men, the house’s offer extends from rings and bracelets to watches and cuff links, placing personal adornment within both everyday dressing and formal occasions.
