Sean O’Pry
Sean O’Pry grew up in Kennesaw, Georgia, with a teenage life organized around sports, not fashion. Prom photographs posted on MySpace led to his discovery in 2006 and representation by VNY Model Management in New York. Within a few years, he was working for Calvin Klein and Giorgio Armani, his sharply angled face and blue eyes becoming recognizable well beyond the runway.
His rise was unusually fast. By 2009, campaigns for Dolce & Gabbana, Lacoste, and H&M had helped establish him among the industry’s leading men. Speaking to Interview that year, Sean credited his manager, Lana Winters Tomczak, for guiding a career whose success still surprised him. The distance between his upbringing and his new profession remained part of his appeal. Kennesaw awarded him a key to the city in August 2009, recognizing both his achievements and his affection for his hometown.
Fragrance advertising gave his image another life. In 2012, Sean became the face of Viktor & Rolf’s Spicebomb, photographed by Inez & Vinoodh for the launch campaign. His strong brow and sculpted features suited the concentrated drama of a fragrance portrait, while his fashion work moved between American sportswear and European luxury.
Music videos introduced him to a broader audience. He appeared in Madonna’s “Girl Gone Wild” in 2012, then played Taylor Swift’s romantic counterpart in “Blank Space” in 2014. The latter made a familiar fashion face newly recognizable to people who had never followed a runway season.
Sean has described modeling as an act of connection, involving the team behind the photograph and the person looking at it. That understanding helps explain the range beneath an apparently fixed image. The face may be immediately identifiable, but the job has required him to become somebody different each time.
