By gearing up with KOIO on a brand new launch of sneakers, Joe Jonas is officially bringing the ’80s back into style. Atiba Jeffson photographs the famous American singer and actor from multiple candid angles, highlighting his new flashy purple shoes. Meanwhile, Sydney Lopez styles the star for the occasion, offering a straightforward wardrobe that puts his feet into perfect focus, an effect further accentuated by the neutral-toned background, an art direction accomplished by Ana Dorla-Duque.

Lopez puts Joe Jonas in KOIO’s Retro Runner Joe Jonas, a high-end set of sneakers that will set you back $298, but it’s a price well paid. Handmade in Marche, Italy, and coming with a comfortable OrthoLite X40 insole, these shoes are a perfect choice for those who love running and value quality at the same time.

These sneakers, adequately named after the singer himself, come in five shades of colors – Runner Joe, Runner Cloud, Runner Mocha, Runner Night, and Runner Grey/Navy. Heads up – KOIO offers a “try before you buy” program where you can test your new sneakers out before you commit. However, this program is only eligible if you purchase a minimum of two items simultaneously – so you might want to shop around the store for other items beforehand.
While connecting with Paige Dorian, head of the production, and Mary Dallas, Joe Jonas talks about his mood board, his design process, and how he’s planning to wear the shoe. The interview reveals that Jonas designed parts of this shoe himself, looking to personal interests for inspiration.
When asked about what led him to reference Tron while selecting materials for these shoes, Jonas replies that “Tron was a huge influence…” and that he “love[s] the neon design aesthetic and how electric the whole thing feels. It’s both futuristic and retro.” And well, we can’t help but agree. There’s no question that the iridescent glisten of the shoe’s material gives it a look straight out of a science fiction movie.
Though KOIO’s Retro Runner Joe Jonas shoes do look like they could be from the future, there’s also something about them that’s rooting them back to the ’80s in a nostalgic “retro” feel – something in the simple design. Saying that many of his “favorite bands and artists are from the ’80s,” Joe Jonas reminisces on past times and how he loved the “overall aesthetic.”
Jonas remarks that after speaking with the KOIO team, they all “collectively decided that the ’80s timeframe” was what they wanted the shoe to reflect. So, listening to Boy George, Wham, and more ’80s artists, Jonas went for a classic old-school look reflected in the sneakers’ soft curves.
