Gap began in San Francisco in 1969, when Donald Fisher and Doris Fisher opened a store selling jeans and records. The name referred to the generation gap, placing the business inside the youth culture of its moment. Denim remained central as Gap grew into a global American clothing brand.
The label’s influence comes from clothes that became part of daily life. T-shirts and jeans supplied a starting point, while khakis and logo sweatshirts helped establish an accessible version of American casual dress. Advertising often gave those simple pieces a personality through music, movement, and recognizable faces.
Design leadership has brought different perspectives to that vocabulary. Patrick Robinson led adult design from 2007 to 2011, followed by Rebekka Bay as creative director from 2012 to 2015. Zac Posen joined parent company Gap Inc. as creative director in 2024 and subsequently developed GapStudio, extending the brand’s essentials into a more expressive design proposition.
Gap’s menswear is rooted in the usefulness of a shared wardrobe. A denim jacket or cotton shirt can be personal through fit and wear even when the design is widely recognizable. That balance between individual style and collective memory has given its everyday clothes an enduring place in American fashion.
