The basics are the foundation at UNIQLO. The Japanese retailer has built its identity around clothes that earn their place through repeated wear, from a plain cotton T-shirt to a light down jacket folded into a work bag. Its LifeWear philosophy treats everyday dressing as a design problem, with attention to fabric, fit, and the price on the tag.
The business grew out of Men’s Shop Ogori Shoji, established in Ube, Japan, in 1949. Tadashi Yanai opened the first UNIQLO store in Hiroshima in 1984, beginning the move from a family menswear business to a casual clothing retailer with international reach. As part of Fast Retailing, UNIQLO developed a wardrobe broad enough for different ages and occupations, with simple shapes that leave much of the styling to the wearer.
Fabric development gives that simplicity a technical foundation. HEATTECH base layers help retain warmth, while AIRism addresses the discomfort of heat and perspiration. The long-running relationship with textile manufacturer Toray has helped turn these functions into everyday products. Technology often works beneath the outfit, leaving the visible clothes free to look like ordinary shirts, trousers, or knitwear.
Designer collections introduce another way to approach those essentials. Uniqlo U has explored proportion and color, while UNIQLO : C applies a more coordinated view to the daily wardrobe. Clare Waight Keller, appointed UNIQLO’s creative director in 2024, works across its mainline menswear and womenswear as well as UNIQLO : C. Across these different expressions, the strongest idea remains practical, giving an everyday garment enough thought that it becomes easy to wear.
