Jaeger-LeCoultre

Jaeger-LeCoultre traces its origins to the workshop Antoine LeCoultre founded in Le Sentier, Switzerland, in 1833. His interest in precision tools and watchmaking helped establish a manufacture in the Vallée de Joux, a region closely associated with mechanical timekeeping. The business developed movements as well as finished watches, building its identity around the mechanism inside the case.

A partnership with Parisian watchmaker Edmond Jaeger began in 1903, when Antoine’s grandson Jacques-David LeCoultre took up the challenge of producing ultra-thin movements. Their work brought together technical invention and the demands of elegant watch design. The combined Jaeger-LeCoultre name was formalized in 1937.

The Reverso, introduced in 1931, became the house’s best-known design. Its rectangular case could turn over to protect the dial during polo, giving a practical sporting requirement an Art Deco form. That construction later provided space for engraving and decorative work, making the watch both a mechanical object and a personal keepsake.

Part of Richemont since 2000, Jaeger-LeCoultre remains based in Le Sentier. Alongside the Reverso, its watchmaking spans restrained dress watches and complex calendar mechanisms. Its position in men’s accessories comes from this relationship between engineering and proportion, with a watch’s outward appearance closely connected to the movement that makes it function.
