Persol was founded in Turin in 1917 by Giuseppe Ratti. Its history began with protective eyewear, establishing a practical foundation for a brand that would become closely associated with Italian style. The name and its sun-focused purpose developed into an identity recognizable through both construction and appearance.

The metal Arrow at the hinge became its most visible signature. Meflecto, a flexible temple system developed to improve comfort, offered a less conspicuous technical distinction. Together, these details helped give Persol frames a recognizable form while addressing how glasses sit against the head.

The 649 model was introduced in 1957 for Turin tram drivers, whose work required protection from sun, wind, and dust. The folding 714 reached a different audience through Steve McQueen, who wore it in the 1968 film The Thomas Crown Affair. That association connected a functional object with an enduring image of masculine screen style.

Acquired by Luxottica in 1995, Persol became part of the group now known as EssilorLuxottica, alongside Ray-Ban and Oliver Peoples. Its Italian manufacturing history remains an important distinction. The enduring attraction lies in frames whose shapes and small construction details can become as identifiable as a person’s choice of watch or jacket.
