J.Crew is making sure no one misses the Barn Jacket’s 40th birthday. For its most ambitious portrait campaign to date, the brand photographed 160 people across New York, Los Angeles, Austin, Boston, and Chicago. Robert Nethery captured celebrities, athletes, artists, and local personalities for the project. With subjects as diverse as Dave Franco, Spike Lee, Ryan Beatty, and Tyler Kolek, the Barn Jacket takes on a life of its own.
Originally introduced in 1986, the Barn Jacket enters its anniversary year with 29 styles across men’s, women’s, and kids, led by the newly proportioned 2026 Barn Jacket. With its new campaign, J.Crew wants the Barn Jacket to transcend its own catalog and occupy the broader territory of American sportswear.
Yet a campaign built around individuality creates an interesting contradiction. Put 160 people in the same recognizable jacket, then seed it across social media, and personal style starts looking a lot like consensus. For a garment whose appeal comes partly from appearing as though it simply found its way into your wardrobe, J.Crew is working very hard to make the Barn Jacket feel inevitable.
