The French designer whose vision of luxury favors the character of the wearer over the status of the label.

Christophe Lemaire is a French fashion designer whose work begins with the demands of getting dressed. At Lemaire, the Paris house he founded in 1991 and leads with Sarah-Linh Tran, utility is a starting point for experiments in proportion. Loose trousers, enveloping coats and shirts that twist around the body offer freedom of movement, with enough character to make a wardrobe personal. His career has taken that interest in daily life through sportswear, luxury and mass-market clothing.

Lemaire began working as an assistant at nineteen, learning in Paris studios including that of Christian Lacroix. An ANDAM fellowship in 1990 helped him establish his own label; menswear followed in 1994. His formation combined studio experience with interests beyond fashion, especially music and the applied arts. Workwear and military clothing became enduring references, valued for the ingenuity of anonymous designers solving practical problems.

He became creative director of Lacoste in 2000, bringing a broader fashion vocabulary to its sporting foundations over the following decade. In 2010, he succeeded Jean Paul Gaultier as artistic director of women’s ready-to-wear at Hermès. The move from the polo shirt to the luxury house tested the same concern with comfort at a different scale of material and construction. He left Hermès in 2014 to concentrate on his own business.

Tran joined the namesake house as co-artistic director in 2010, helping shape its image as well as its clothes. Their shared approach makes room for the way people actually wear things. Layering and nuanced color allow pieces to migrate between outfits, while a curved seam or an unexpected volume interrupts the predictability of a basic. Speaking to Blackbird Spyplane in March 2026, Lemaire described starting from practical needs such as pockets and protection from the weather, then introducing an element of strangeness.

That method reached a wider audience through Uniqlo. A collaboration launched in 2015 led to his appointment as artistic director of its Paris R&D Center in 2016 and the introduction of Uniqlo U. Their decade-long Uniqlo partnership ended in 2026 as the designers refocused on Lemaire. Across those different settings, his central subject has remained the relationship between a garment and its wearer, with design expressed through use as much as appearance.
