Canali launched in 1934 in Triuggio, a small town in Brianza halfway between Milan and Lake Como, founded by brothers Giovanni and Giacomo Canali. Giovanni had just lost his warehouse job when the local Galeazzo Viganò textile company closed, and Giacomo was a tailor who had run a small workshop in the area since 1908.
The brothers opened a menswear production business together that grew to around 100 employees before the war interrupted trade. The Italian trade press came to frame Canali as the archetype of the family-run Brianza tailoring house, a Made in Italy category that would define Italian menswear through the second half of the century.
Menswear has been the entire business. The second generation, Giuseppe, Genesio, and Eugenio, took over in the 1950s and specialized in raincoats in cotton, wool, and silk before shifting the house toward men’s suiting at the end of the 1960s.
Canali became the first Italian tailor to introduce mechanised cutting in 1974, pairing industrial scale with hand-finishing to build soft-shouldered suits in super-fine wool, cashmere overcoats, and tailored separates.
That positioning placed Canali alongside Brioni, Kiton, Zegna, and Corneliani as one of the Italian houses that defined post-war luxury men’s tailoring, though its price point sat a step below Brioni and Kiton.
The third generation took over in the 1980s and drove the international expansion that pushed overseas sales past fifty percent by 1980 and opened flagships in Milan, New York, Paris, and London. The company abandoned its strictly family-managed structure in 2007, the same year the KEI Jacket launched with a patented shoulder construction for mobility and became the house signature.
Canali closed its Carate Brianza factory in 2017 and introduced the Black Edition line in 2019 alongside the Canali 1934 and Exclusive tiers. Stefano Canali, grandson of founder Giovanni, serves as president and CEO, and the house marked its ninetieth anniversary in 2024 with a capsule collection.
Today Canali operates roughly 190 boutiques and over 1,000 retail points across more than 100 countries, dressing the luxury menswear shopper through tailoring, outerwear, and soft sportswear aimed at the executive customer who wants Italian craft without the Brioni price. It sits as one of the last third-generation family-owned Italian tailoring houses of its scale.
