Olivier Rousteing
Olivier Rousteing is a French fashion designer whose work joins elaborate workmanship with the direct appeal of a performance wardrobe. His fourteen years as creative director of Balmain brought sculpted shoulders and dense embellishment into close contact with music and celebrity. Appointed creative director of Rabanne in 2026, he entered another house with a history of material experimentation.
Raised in Bordeaux, Rousteing developed his career at Roberto Cavalli before joining Balmain in 2009. In 2011, aged twenty-five, he succeeded Christophe Decarnin as creative director. The appointment gave a young designer responsibility for a historic couture name, with the task of developing its contemporary identity across women’s and men’s clothes.
At Balmain, tailored jackets and military references became part of a wardrobe that could accommodate both formal ceremony and pop performance. His public-facing Balmain Army connected the house with a younger audience, while the 2015 H&M collaboration brought its image to a wider market. He also returned the house to couture presentations in 2019 and designed a guest couture collection for Jean Paul Gaultier in 2022.
His personal history became part of his public work through Wonder Boy, the 2019 documentary following his search for his birth parents. It added a more intimate account of identity to a career often viewed through spectacle. Rousteing left Balmain in November 2025. In its announcement of his Rabanne appointment, Puig connected his work with self-expression and confirmed his first show for March 2027. The move extends a practice in which the image of a fashion house is inseparable from the people who feel invited into it.
