Founder: Donna Karan

Established: 1989

Headquarters: New York City, United States

DKNY was founded by Donna Karan in 1989 as a younger, more accessible expression of her New York design world. The initials stand for Donna Karan New York, placing the city inside the name as well as the clothes. Jeans and the speed of sportswear supplied an alternative to the more formal expectations of a designer wardrobe.

The label’s identity grew around the practical demands of urban life. Casual separates could sit alongside tailoring, allowing clothes to move between work and time off. In menswear, that approach appears through outerwear and knitwear as readily as denim, with an emphasis on pieces that can become part of a daily routine.

New York also gave DKNY a visual language. Graphic logos and campaign imagery connected the wardrobe to the city’s pace and mix of personalities. The name became shorthand for an accessible version of American fashion, extending into footwear and accessories as well as fragrance.

Designers Dao-Yi Chow and Maxwell Osborne led the women’s collections from 2015 to 2016, adding their own perspective on New York dressing. The brand became part of G-III Apparel Group in 2016. Its enduring proposition remains the same, bringing the energy of a city into clothes intended to work across the changing demands of a day.
