Preppy clothes can stand a little disorder. Zara’s “Color Coded” fall edit gives them just enough, with Valentin Humbroich wearing bright knitwear in layers that refuse to stay tucked away. A red polo spreads its collar over a cream cardigan, while yellow peeks through at the neckline and cuffs.
The pieces are simple; how much of each one shows changes the whole look. That same instinct carries through a blue sweater wrapped around the shoulders of a pink knit, adding another block of color to an otherwise conventional shirt-and-sweater combination.
Zara Color Coded Fall Edit

There is a boyish pleasure in these arrangements, helped by Valentin’s tousled hair and the loose trousers falling around his bare feet. Even the quieter looks keep something out of place, with a blue shirt extending below a dark sweater and its cuffs rolled back into view.

Then comes the yellow cable knit and matching scarf, long enough to reach the floor, taking coordination to a faintly comic extreme. Zara leaves plenty of usable ideas along the way. Before buying another sweater, try letting the shirt underneath have more of a say.

Color Coded brings playfulness to everyday knitwear, while John Galliano’s Re{form} Zara collection takes dressing into theatrical territory.
