Let’s face it, Brazilians care about their appearance. And while fashion styles vary depending on the region of the country, there are several rules you can follow to ensure that you don’t stick out like a sore thumb. “Before packing, consider whether you will be visiting a city, beaches, or mountainous regions. Are you going on vacation, or is this a business trip? Your destination and the purpose of your visit should influence what clothes you opt to take with you,” says fashion expert from Reviewbox.com.br, Javier Ribas. With this in mind, here are a few tips to help you look like a local while visiting this vast South American country.

It’s Not Hot All Year Round

Brazil is synonymous with tropical weather; however, depending on the region and time of year, things can get a little cold. Brazil has four different climatic zones, so always do some research before your trip. Winter nights can get chilly, so it is a good idea to bring a sweater. If you are planning a trip to the mountains, be prepared for cold weather, no matter the season. Also, just like in the United States, many restaurants in Brazil like to set their air-conditioners on high, so it is always a good idea to have a jacket on hand.

Mind Regional Differences

Brazil’s fashion varies depending on what region you are visiting. The general rule of thumb is that men and women wear very distinct clothing. Casual attire, such as colorful jeans and T-shirts, is popular among men in big cities while people in regional areas go for more practical and low-key looks.

Casual Clothing

When out and about, Brazilian men usually wear short-sleeved shirts (T-shirts are very popular) and linen khakis or jeans. Brazilians often opt for trousers that are not too baggy or close-fitting. Leave your black T-shirts at home because Brazilians love bright colors and patterns in their clothing.

Dressing for Business

Status in Brazil is important, so be sure to bring a dark-colored suit if you are visiting the country on business. It is also a good idea to invest in a dress shirt, tie, and dark shiny shoes, as these are worn even during the hottest months of the year. Avoid colorful clothing or patterns.

Beachwear

When on the beach, Brazilian men usually wear sunga, or speedo-style swimwear, to show off their physiques. If you are shy, trunks are also an acceptable option. Not surprisingly, Havaianas are ubiquitous on the country’s beaches—the flip-flop brand was founded in Brazil in 1962. Avoid using a beach towel, as Brazilian men usually rent barracas, or chairs set up along the beach.
