Mark Vanderloo
Mark Vanderloo is a Dutch model whose work helped define the male supermodel era of the 1990s. His associations with Hugo Boss and Donna Karan made him a recognizable figure beyond the runway, putting a face to the decade’s international menswear advertising.
Born in Waddinxveen, the Netherlands, Mark studied history before modeling became his profession. Accounts of his discovery differ in their particulars, but his early career developed into a demanding international schedule. By the mid-1990s, he was working across European fashion houses and American advertising, becoming one of the relatively few male models whose names reached a broader public.
Hugo Boss became a defining connection. Mark appeared alongside Jason Lewis in the label’s fall-winter 1995 campaign, photographed by Richard Avedon. His work for Donna Karan and DKNY supplied another influential chapter, including Peter Lindbergh’s spring 1995 photographs with Shalom Harlow. These images placed him at the center of an era when menswear advertising increasingly sold a recognizable personality alongside the clothes.
The pace came with costs. In a 2017 interview with El País Semanal, Mark recalled reaching a point in his twenties when the intensity of work made him contemplate leaving the profession. His career continued, but family life became an important part of how he organized it.
His son, Mark Vanderloo Jr., subsequently entered modeling, creating a professional relationship alongside their family one. They appeared together for Massimo Dutti in 2019 and later shared magazine shoots and runway assignments. For Mark, those collaborations added a new dimension to a career already rooted in fashion’s photographic history, allowing father and son to work within the same industry from different generations.
