Cartier
Cartier
Cartier was founded in Paris in 1847 by Louis-François Cartier. The French jewelry house developed from a family workshop into an international name, with jewelry and watchmaking forming the core of its identity. Its designs often make a recognizable outline or construction detail the starting point for a lasting collection.
Wristwatches gave Cartier a particular place in men’s style. Louis Cartier created the Santos for aviator Alberto Santos-Dumont in 1904, responding to the practical difficulty of consulting a pocket watch while flying. The Tank followed in 1917, establishing a rectangular form that would become one of the house’s most enduring designs.
Those watches offer an alternative to the idea that a men’s timepiece must announce itself through size or sporting equipment. Case shape and proportion can do the work instead. Cartier’s jewelry follows a related logic, with repeated forms and recognizable details allowing an individual piece to hold its identity across different materials.
The house’s men’s wardrobe extends from watches to bracelets, rings, and other accessories. Its appeal rests on objects that can become part of a person’s daily dress, retaining a connection to their original design as fashions change. Based in Paris and part of Richemont, Cartier maintains an identity in which jewelry and watchmaking inform one another.
