The construction of a garment becomes part of its meaning at Maison Margiela. Founded in Paris in 1988 by Martin Margiela and Jenny Meirens, the house built its reputation by questioning the usual signals of luxury. Exposed processes, altered proportions, and the transformation of familiar objects give its clothes a conceptual charge without removing them from the act of getting dressed.
Anonymity became a central house idea. The blank white label, secured by four stitches, directed attention toward the garment rather than a conspicuous designer name. Numerical coding and white paint supplied other recognizable signatures. In menswear, that perspective can turn a conventional jacket, a shirt, or a pair of jeans into an examination of how clothing is assembled and how its details are understood.
The house’s reach extends from ready-to-wear and footwear to accessories, fragrance, and its Artisanal couture collections. Maison Margiela joined the OTB Group in 2002 and received the Haute Couture designation in 2012. Projects such as the 2012 collaboration with H&M brought archive ideas to a wider public, while its partnership with Gentle Monster translated house codes into eyewear.
After Martin Margiela’s departure, the studio carried the collections forward before John Galliano became creative director in 2014. Galliano’s tenure developed a theatrical and technically ambitious couture language, ending in 2024. Glenn Martens was appointed creative director in January 2025. The change continues a house history in which new interpretations are measured against enduring questions of identity, transformation, and the value assigned to the clothes we wear.
