Stone Island was founded in 1982 in Ravarino, Italy, by Massimo Osti, the Bolognese designer already known for his work at C.P. Company.
The label began as an experiment in fabric, with Osti treating textiles like a laboratory subject, dyeing, coating, and resin-finishing materials sourced from industrial and military supply chains. Early press and retailers tagged it a “sportswear research” project, a description that stuck and shaped how the brand was read for decades.
Menswear drives the proposition, though the brand has expanded beyond it. Alongside the core lineup of jackets, knitwear, trousers, and overshirts engineered around fabric innovation, Stone Island generates significant revenue from an extensive accessories range that includes technical backpacks, crossbody bags, headwear, and belts.
The garments are recognizable for the compass-rose badge buttoned onto the left sleeve, for parkas in reflective glass-bead coatings, for ice jackets in thermosensitive dye, and for nylon metal weaves that shift color in the light.
Within the Italian sportswear conversation that includes C.P. Company, Aspesi, and later Arc’teryx Veilance from Canada, Stone Island occupies the technical-textile end of the spectrum. The brand has held a long association with British football casual subculture from the late 1980s onward, a credential that gave it cultural weight well beyond fashion press coverage.
Carlo Rivetti, who had partnered with Osti through the GFT-linked Sportswear Company, took full ownership in 1993 after Osti’s departure, and ran the business as a family-held operation for nearly three decades.
In December 2020, Moncler acquired Sportswear Company in a deal valued at around 1.15 billion euros, with Rivetti staying on in a senior role and joining the Moncler board.
Today, the brand dresses a wide audience, from football terraces to Drake and the grime scene, and sits in the upper tier of technical menswear pricing alongside Arc’teryx and Acronym, still selling the same proposition Osti started with, a jacket as a piece of applied chemistry.
