Pharrell Williams
Pharrell Williams entered fashion through music adjacency, partnering in 2003 with A Bathing Ape founder Nigo and Japanese graphic designer Sk8thing to launch Billionaire Boys Club, a New York streetwear label that ran on limited drops and Tokyo-made construction.
The defining apprenticeship sat with Nigo, who designed the early collections and translated the all-over graphics depicting hip-hop iconography, dollar bills, beepers and diamonds, alongside playful waffle and dripping ice cream cone motifs that would mark sister label Ice Cream from 2004 forward.
The method that emerged in those years runs on graphic saturation over restraint, hooded fleece and varsity jackets in saturated colorways, Bapesta-derived sneaker silhouettes, and a Japanese craft standard applied to American sportswear shapes.
Louis Vuitton appointed Williams as Men’s Creative Director in February 2023, succeeding the late Virgil Abloh at the largest house inside LVMH.
The spring-summer 2024 debut on the Pont Neuf on June 20, 2023 sent dandy silhouettes encrusted with pearls and crystals down a gilded checkerboard runway, with pearl-embellished tracksuits, furry outerwear and sparkling jackets, alongside calf-leather Speedy and Keepall reissues hung close to the ground, smaller structured bags with chain and pearl detailing, and furry trapper hats.
The work landed away from the Phoebe Philo and Lemaire lineage of pared menswear, closer to the post-Abloh argument that a luxury house could absorb hip-hop and skate codes wholesale, with glass pearls hand-placed along the pockets and seams of a track jacket priced at $7,500 standing in for the older logic of tailored prestige.
The debut posted a media impact value of $42.6 million, the top-ranked men’s show of the season, and pushed Vuitton past 3 million YouTube subscribers, the commercial proof that the appointment had landed.
This chapter places his earlier Billionaire Boys Club thesis inside the Vuitton archive, where the Damier ceases to be a heritage marker and becomes a graphic field, the same operating principle that ran through the BBC astronaut and Ice Cream cone two decades earlier.
