Lucas Ossendrijver
Lucas Ossendrijver is a Dutch fashion designer known for bringing an experimental approach to the construction of menswear. His long tenure at Lanvin made an everyday wardrobe a setting for material research, with tailoring and sportswear informing one another. A jacket could retain its elegance while a technical detail changed how it moved or felt.
Ossendrijver studied at Arnhem’s Institute of the Arts and developed an early design collective with fellow students Viktor Horsting and Rolf Snoeren. He joined Kenzo in 1997, then worked with Hedi Slimane at Dior Homme from 2001. “That was another kind of school,” he told Interview in June 2012, describing the Dior years as an education in rigor, extending from tailoring to every part of the design process.
He arrived at Lanvin in 2005, working in dialogue with Alber Elbaz to develop its menswear. The collections allowed soft tailoring to sit alongside sports references, with the house’s patent-trimmed sneakers becoming an influential expression of that mix. He resisted a single prescribed silhouette, proposing different ways for a man to dress across the day. He left the house in 2018.
A later collaboration with Theory brought his work to men’s and women’s capsules, with the first Theory Project collection reaching stores in 2022. “I’ve always worked on things that are in-between,” he told Wallpaper in September 2022, identifying the space between formal and casual dress as a continuing interest. The clothes continued an interest in function and fabrication developed through his earlier work. His contribution to menswear lies in the possibilities between categories, where a formal garment can borrow from sport and an ordinary piece can reward a closer look at how it is made.
