Jonathan Anderson

The Northern Irish founder of JW Anderson, who rebuilt Loewe around the Puzzle bag and art-world provocation over 11 years, now directing all of Dior.

Jonathan Anderson came up through the London College of Fashion, graduating in menswear in 2005, and began his career working as a visual merchandiser for Prada, working for Manuela Pavesi.

He launched his menswear collection under the JW Anderson label in 2008, and in 2010 received sponsorship from the British Fashion Council’s Newgen committee and produced his first catwalk collection at London Fashion Week, with a women’s capsule following and a brief Versus Versace stint under Donatella Versace in 2012.

The signature that emerged across those early seasons was a cross-pollination of menswear and womenswear, ruffled bandeaus on men, leather mini-kilts, peplum shorts, the silhouette pulled tight at the hip and flared into something domestic and strange.

In September 2013, LVMH took a minority stake in JW Anderson and named Anderson as the new creative director for Spanish luxury house LOEWE. The clothes that came out of Madrid, then Paris, were a study in leather as soft architecture, the Puzzle bag in 2015, the Flamenco hobo, blanket-weight coats, trompe-l’oeil knits, balloon-cuffed denim, broken-egg heels, dresses pinned with raw fabric swatches.

Loewe’s positioning settled somewhere adjacent to the craft-forward minimalism of Phoebe Philo’s Celine and the dressed-down ateliers of Lemaire, though Anderson pushed harder into ceramics, weaving and the Loewe Foundation Craft Prize, which he established in 2016; the awards followed, including the 2022 WWD Honor for Womenswear Designer of the Year, the 2023 CFDA International Designer of the Year, and Designer of the Year at the British Fashion Awards in 2023 and 2024.

Revenues multiplied more than seven times during his tenure to approach 2 billion euros, and after 11 years at Loewe, Anderson stepped down as the house’s creative director on 17 March 2025.

In June 2025 Anderson was named Dior’s creative director of women’s, men’s and haute couture collections, becoming Dior’s eighth couturier and the first designer to oversee the couture, women’s and men’s divisions, succeeding Kim Jones in menswear and Maria Grazia Chiuri in womenswear.

He presented his first collection, Dior Men summer 2026, in Paris on June 27, 2025, the show pulling Bar jacket proportions over cargo shorts, ivory stock-tie blouses, book-bound clutches, the Lady Dior reimagined in collaboration with textile artist Sheila Hicks for his spring-summer 2026 debut on the women’s side.

The Dior chapter consolidates the argument running through his JW Anderson and Loewe years, that a house’s archive is raw material to be edited rather than preserved, and that craft and commerce can occupy the same garment.
