Miles McMillan

Miles McMillan is an American model and painter whose long hair and lean frame brought an artist’s sensibility to international menswear. His fashion career developed alongside a studio practice, giving him experience as both the maker of an image and its subject.

Raised in La Jolla, California, Miles moved to New York to study fine arts at NYU Steinhardt. Modeling began while he was still a student, after a photographer approached him on the Lower East Side about an Urban Outfitters shoot. He accepted the job and later signed with an agency, entering fashion professionally around 2010.

Art was already central to his life. In a 2015 interview with Sleek, Miles credited teachers Maureen Gallace and Jack Pierson with helping shape his practice. Becoming a model also changed his paintings. He began examining himself through nude self-portraits, then paid closer attention to photographs and the effect of light on skin. The exchange between the two disciplines was personal as well as visual.

Runway work for designers including Alexander McQueen and Lanvin established his place in fashion, while a recurring association with Tommy Hilfiger introduced him to a broader commercial audience. His spring-summer 2014 campaign appearance placed his bohemian look within the label’s beachside version of American prep. He could suggest an outsider and still look at home in the group.

Reflecting on his career in a 2023 interview with DAMAN, Miles singled out photographs by Pierson for AnOther Man and Purple as work he was especially proud of. Being photographed by his former painting teacher brought his two careers into direct conversation.

He also credited stylist Karl Templer, a frequent Tommy Hilfiger collaborator, as an important influence. For Miles, modeling depended on expressing something through the body and clothes, a concern that linked it to painting more closely than their different working routines might suggest.
