Alexander McQueen was founded in London in 1992 by Lee Alexander McQueen. He was a Savile Row-trained tailor who launched his label straight out of his Central Saint Martins MA collection. The proposition was confrontational from the start.

Runway shows were staged as theater, tailoring was sharpened to the point of violence, and a romantic streak ran underneath the darkness. The press settled on a label that stuck for years, the enfant terrible of British fashion, a designer who treated the catwalk as a place to provoke.

Menswear has always been part of the house’s foundation. It traces to McQueen’s apprenticeship at Anderson & Sheppard and Gieves & Hawkes before he ever showed a collection.

The design language pulls from English tailoring and bends it. The vocabulary includes narrow shoulders, low-rise trousers in the early years, skull-print silk scarves, leather harnesses, and the bumster cut that exposed the base of the spine.

Within the industry, the house sits in conversation with John Galliano at Dior and Hussein Chalayan. Both designers worked the same period and treated clothes as narrative. McQueen himself won British Designer of the Year four times between 1996 and 2003. He was appointed head designer at Givenchy in 1996 at the age of 27.

The Gucci Group, now Kering, acquired 51 percent of the company in 2000. The capital let the label expand into accessories, fragrance, and a global retail network. After Lee McQueen’s death in February 2010, longtime collaborator Sarah Burton took over as creative director. She held the role until 2023 and designed the wedding dress for Catherine Middleton in 2011.

Seán McGirr was appointed creative director in late 2023. He inherited a house that dresses a customer split between tailoring clients and a younger streetwear-adjacent audience drawn to the skull motifs, oversized sneakers, and graphic knitwear.

In the current market, McQueen sits alongside Balenciaga and Gucci as a Kering-owned house working out what a founder-defined identity looks like a decade after the founder is gone.
