Ash Stymest

Ash Stymest is a British model, musician, and actor whose tattooed skater image helped define men’s fashion’s fascination with unruly individuality in the late 2000s. His arrival was unusually conspicuous. In 2008, Hedi Slimane photographed him for the inaugural cover of Vogue Hommes Japan, giving a newcomer a central role in the magazine’s launch.

Scouted in Camden as a teenager, Ash entered fashion with a background in skateboarding and drumming. His lean build and tattoos suited a moment when casting increasingly drew on the characters and attitudes of music scenes. The appeal lay partly in the impression that he belonged to that world before anyone put him in designer clothes.

In a 2023 interview with The Untitled Magazine, Ash recalled the abrupt journey from being scouted to flying to Japan for Slimane’s cover shoot. Their connection extended to clothes, which he felt the designer made with someone like him in mind. Music remained a personal priority. He had played drums with Bones UK before developing his own work as a singer and songwriter, describing a sound that had moved beyond his earlier thrashier punk interests.

Acting opened another avenue for performance, including roles in Sex Doll and the 2021 horror anthology Phobias. These pursuits developed alongside modeling, giving him creative outlets in which his own voice could become part of the work.

His place in fashion also outlasted the initial excitement around his debut. Steven Meisel included Ash in the 2023 campaign for his Zara collection, fifteen years after the Vogue Hommes Japan cover. The skater first photographed by Slimane had become an established face with a history of his own.
