Virgil Abloh
Virgil Abloh was an American fashion designer whose work connected streetwear with the structures of luxury. As founder of Off-White and men’s artistic director of Louis Vuitton, he brought the references of a younger audience into houses and institutions with established ideas of authority. His practice also extended across music and the design of objects, with collaboration central to the way he worked.
Born in Rockford, Illinois, in 1980, Abloh studied civil engineering at the University of Wisconsin-Madison before completing a master’s degree in architecture at the Illinois Institute of Technology. That training informed his interest in how an object acquires meaning through its context. Pyrex Vision preceded the founding of Off-White in 2013, where industrial graphics and quotation marks became recognizable devices for reframing ordinary clothes.
His 2017 Nike project, The Ten, exposed and altered parts of established sneaker designs. It made the process of reconstruction visible, giving familiar products a new reading through material and assembly. Louis Vuitton appointed him to lead menswear in March 2018. His collections brought tailoring into contact with the cultural world that had shaped his earlier work, opening another route between a luxury house and the people who followed it.
The Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago’s 2019 exhibition, Figures of Speech, placed his clothing alongside other parts of his practice. In the museum’s audio account of The Ten, Abloh connected the Nike collaboration to his childhood admiration for Michael Jordan. The reference located a major design project in an experience shared by many of its audience. He died on November 28, 2021, aged forty-one, leaving a body of work in which the circulation of ideas mattered as much as the finished object.
