John Galliano

The Gibraltar-born British designer who approaches dress as an act of transformation, giving fashion the emotional scale of theatre.

John Galliano is a British fashion designer whose work combines historical research with an unusually expressive understanding of cut. Bias-cut dresses and elaborate tailoring can suggest a character before that character has spoken. His collections have made the runway a setting for stories, with the clothes establishing both the world and the people who inhabit it.

Galliano graduated from Central Saint Martins in 1984 with a collection inspired by the Incroyables of post-Revolutionary France. He developed his namesake label, John Galliano, before moving into the leadership of Paris couture houses. Givenchy appointed him in 1995; Dior followed in 1996. At Dior, his work joined the house’s structured silhouette with his own interest in historical dress and dramatic presentation.

His Dior tenure ended in 2011 after antisemitic abuse in Paris, a consequential part of his career that cannot be separated from the break that followed. He returned to a major creative role at Maison Margiela in 2014, presenting his first Artisanal collection in January 2015. There, a decade of work brought his theatrical instincts into dialogue with the house’s practice of taking garments apart and questioning how they acquire meaning. He left in December 2024.

In a 2026 interview with Vogue, Galliano discussed a two-year partnership with Zara to rework its archives. The collaboration extended an enduring part of his method, finding new possibilities in existing clothes. From an altered seam to a whole cast of runway characters, his design asks how a change in dress can change the person the world sees.
