Ports 1961 traces its origins to the Canadian fashion business founded by Luke Tanabe in 1961. The original idea grew around a shirt designed for his wife, establishing a relationship between practical clothing and a cosmopolitan way of life. The Ports 1961 designer label took shape in New York in 2004 under Tia Cibani, with Fiona Cibani subsequently taking the creative lead.
Menswear became a dedicated part of Ports 1961 in 2011. Its collections brought tailoring into contact with casual clothing, exploring how a wardrobe might accommodate different settings and degrees of formality. The emphasis could shift from a coat’s construction to a graphic gesture, with the same interest in how clothes communicate across cultures.
Milan Vukmirovic joined to lead menswear in 2014. His collections introduced emphatic graphics and references to sport, while campaigns connected that vocabulary to the models wearing it. Military details and athletic proportions gave the label another direction beyond its earlier tailoring.
Ports 1961’s subsequent development has centered on womenswear, and its active fashion business should be distinguished from the earlier men’s line. Design director Francesco Bertolini has revisited the house’s association with travel through fabric and construction. The menswear archive remains a separate chapter in a broader history linking Canadian origins to an international designer label.
