Peter Dundas
Peter Dundas is a Norwegian fashion designer whose work makes the body an active part of a garment’s design. His clothes use close cuts and expressive surfaces to create an image of confidence, developed through couture studios and luxury houses before the launch of his own label. Performance dressing has provided a particularly visible setting for that approach.
Born in Oslo, Dundas studied at Parsons in New York before moving to Paris. Early costume work at the Comédie-Française preceded an eight-year period with Jean Paul Gaultier, beginning in 1992. He then worked at Christian Lacroix, where his interest in color and pattern developed further. A move to Roberto Cavalli as chief designer brought that Paris experience into an Italian house identified with sensual dressing.
Creative leadership at Emanuel Ungaro was followed by his appointment to Emilio Pucci in 2008. At Pucci, he explored the label’s connection to leisure while developing a more nocturnal wardrobe. In March 2015, he returned to Roberto Cavalli as creative director, overseeing men’s as well as women’s collections. He left Cavalli in October 2016. He launched Dundas with his partner Evangelo Bousis in 2017, establishing a business built around his own point of view.
In a March 2023 interview with the Fédération de la Haute Couture et de la Mode, he described the close connection between his work and his clients. “I am lucky as many of my muses are girls whose life I partake in,” he said. Stage commissions, including Super Bowl performances, enlarged the audience for his work but also demanded an understanding of movement and the camera. His career connects the craft of the fitting room with the scale of a public appearance, where the right cut must make an impression in an instant.
