GreyscaleE.Tautz designer Patrick Grant looks to the Scottish isles for the inspiration of his fall/winter 2013 collection. With the surprisingly picturesque seascape of Harris on a gloomy day motivating the soft grey palette, Grant experimented with checks to great success. Upscaled tartans and checks strategically placed on the body emphasised proportions while bias draping created dramatic visual effects, especially when orange accents were introduced submerged in patterns. Knitwear featuring argyle shapes were tilted horizontally and broken up at times, adding a modern abstraction. The usual graceful, suave tailoring was evident with an emphasis on the double-breasted, complemented by soft unstructured outerwear such as belted overcoats and peacoats. Looser fitting “plus eight” breeches were introduced this season tucked into hand-knitted sports socks. While silk and wool jacquard were used for ties, overshirts and trousers added a hint of refined elegance. By fusing the finesse of Savile Row tailoring with clever visual abstractions, Grant created a collection that is beautifully crafted, luxurious, and graphic. / Words by KENNY HO
