Thom Sweeney

Thom Sweeney was founded in London in 2007 by tailors Thom Whiddett and Luke Sweeney. The pair met while working for Timothy Everest, where Whiddett was head cutter and Sweeney managed made-to-measure. Their shared experience brought together the technical work of cutting a suit and an understanding of how clients wanted to wear one.

The house began with private orders in Mayfair before opening its first store on Weighhouse Street in 2009. Bespoke tailoring established its foundations, with a house style that softened the traditional English suit. The aim was clothing that could accommodate contemporary life while retaining the structure and care associated with a tailor’s workroom.

Ready-to-wear expanded that offer through a partnership with Mr Porter. Made-to-measure supplied another route between a garment bought off the rack and one developed from an individual pattern. Casual pieces extended the wardrobe beyond appointments and formal occasions, keeping tailoring in conversation with knitwear and relaxed separates.

A New York store followed in 2017, and the London townhouse on Old Burlington Street opened in 2020. Bringing retail and tailoring workrooms together, it expressed the founders’ interest in a continuing relationship with the customer. Thom Sweeney’s place in British menswear rests on making the suit part of a wider wardrobe, with different levels of service organized around how a man lives and dresses.
