Steven Alan

Steven Alan began in New York in 1994, when Steven Alan Grossman opened a small store on Wooster Street in SoHo. Selling independent labels alongside an eclectic selection of other products, he developed a retail perspective that valued personal taste over a complete designer look. His own clothing line grew from that understanding of how customers actually dressed.

The Reverse Seam shirt became a signature. Its unconventional construction gave a familiar button-down a subtly altered character, establishing an approach in which small details mattered more than conspicuous branding. Shirts and relaxed separates formed the basis of a wardrobe associated with downtown New York, balancing everyday usefulness with an eye for fabric and proportion.

The business expanded through stores and a showroom representing independent designers. Collaborations, including a collection with Gap, introduced Alan’s interpretation of American casual clothing to a wider audience. His position as both retailer and designer allowed the namesake label to develop alongside a broader conversation about emerging fashion.

After closing his earlier United States stores, Alan returned to physical retail in September 2024 with a shop on West 20th Street in Chelsea. The new chapter renewed the connection between his own menswear and a personally chosen assortment of other goods. Across its different periods, Steven Alan has treated clothing as part of an individual wardrobe, with the shirt remaining a useful expression of that approach.
