Hardy Amies

Hardy Amies established his London fashion house in 1946 at 14 Savile Row. Best known as a dressmaker to Queen Elizabeth II, he also helped change the relationship between British tailoring and the wider clothing market. His house combined the authority of couture with an interest in how people dressed in everyday life.

Menswear became an important part of that work. In 1961, Amies partnered with Hepworths to develop ready-to-wear clothing for men, bringing a designer’s eye to suits available beyond the private fitting room. His early menswear catwalk presentations helped establish a public stage for a category that had largely been sold through the shop and the tailor’s appointment.

The designer’s influence also extended into writing and film. His 1964 book ABC of Men’s Fashion offered an opinionated guide to dress, while his costumes for Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey placed his ideas about clothing in an imagined future. Both projects widened the reach of his name beyond the house’s collections.

After Amies retired in 2001, designers including Ian Garlant and Mehmet Ali continued the label’s work. The London business entered administration in 2019, ending the chapter covered by its Savile Row collections. Its menswear archive records an ongoing negotiation between British tailoring traditions and the demands of ready-to-wear.
