Headquarters: London, United Kingdom

E. Tautz was founded in London in 1867 by Edward Tautz. The business began with clothing for sport and outdoor pursuits, developing a reputation for breeches and tailored sporting wardrobes. Its history placed it within a British tradition in which a garment’s cut had to answer the requirements of movement as well as social convention.

The name later became part of Norton & Sons. After acquiring the Savile Row tailoring business in 2005, Patrick Grant revived E. Tautz as a ready-to-wear label in 2009. The relaunch offered an alternative to commissioning a bespoke wardrobe, drawing on tailoring knowledge while allowing Grant to address a different customer.

Under his direction, the collections moved beyond the conventional suit. Wide trousers and generously cut outerwear gave British clothing traditions a different scale, while workwear and sporting references broadened the label’s identity. Shirts and knitwear became important companions to tailoring, helping establish an interpretation of menswear that could be formal in construction and relaxed in attitude.

The operating company entered liquidation in 2022, ending this modern chapter of the label. E. Tautz’s archive connects Victorian sporting dress with the experiments of London’s menswear collections. Its revival showed how an old tailoring name could support new ideas about proportion, manufacturing, and the role of ready-to-wear clothing.
