Paul Smith’s latest occasionwear edit gives the coat a say in the evening’s plans. Erik van Gils steps out in clothes that treat the trip to dinner as part of dressing for it, with a brown leather jacket supplying the most persuasive example. Worn over a tonal shirt and spotted tie, its glossy surface lends a little nightclub character to the shirt-and-tie routine. The trousers keep the look connected to tailoring, while the jacket suggests a later reservation.

A gray Storm System mac takes a practical approach, covering a suit for the journey through wet streets, and a Donegal wool overcoat brings flecked texture to winter layering. Indoors, an emerald velvet blazer worn with jeans continues the easy relationship between dressed-up fabrics and everyday clothes. The pleasure is in those adjustments. A tie can change the company a leather jacket keeps; denim can give velvet a more casual evening out.
