Corey Baptiste
Corey Baptiste is an American model raised in the Bronx, with Trinidadian and Grenadian family roots. His career developed quickly through New York advertising and the European runway, placing him among the Black male models who challenged the narrow casting practices of early-2010s menswear.
He was attending John Jay College when manager Brandon Wilson discovered him. In a 2010 interview with The Fashionisto, Corey recalled how abruptly his life had changed after signing with VNY. A first shoot with Sean Kilkenny supplied an image for his comp card, while regular test shoots helped him learn the job.
He described himself as a joker who enjoyed making people laugh, a quality he welcomed the chance to bring to photographs. College and sports remained part of his life as assignments began taking him abroad.
DKNY was an early commercial breakthrough, followed by advertising for Benetton and Kenzo. His European runway career included Giorgio Armani and Calvin Klein. Closing D&G’s January 2011 menswear show became a particularly meaningful moment. In Bethann Hardison’s 2012 profile for Vogue Italia, Corey recalled his pride in the booking and what it represented for Black models on an influential Milan runway.
Success also gave him a platform to discuss exclusion. Speaking to Out in 2015, Corey recalled a Milan casting director publicly telling him that models of color were not being sought. He argued that major fashion houses had a responsibility to broaden opportunity, explaining that he wanted to see that progress even when another model received the booking. His account linked an individual career to a larger question of who was allowed to represent luxury.
Alongside magazine work for VMAN and Interview, Corey built an enduring connection to tailored menswear. His appearances in Giorgio Armani’s 2023 Made to Measure lookbook continued a relationship that began on the runway. Across advertising and fashion publishing, his portfolio traces a route from a rapid New York debut to an established place in international menswear.
