Robert Geller
Robert Geller is a German-born fashion designer whose menswear developed through independent New York labels before his appointment at Rag & Bone. His collections use color and shifts in proportion to soften the boundary between dressed-up and casual clothes. The result is a wardrobe in which a practical piece can also suggest a mood.
Geller graduated from the Rhode Island School of Design in 2001, beginning his industry experience at Marc Jacobs. He then joined Alexandre Plokhov at Cloak, the New York label whose darkly expressive menswear gave him an early setting for working on a complete collection. He launched his namesake line, Robert Geller, in 2007 and gained recognition through GQ‘s Best New Menswear Designer in America award in 2009 and the CFDA Swarovski Award for Menswear in 2011.
His work later expanded through Gustav von Aschenbach, introduced in 2017 as a more accessible proposition. Named for the central character in Thomas Mann’s Death in Venice, it continued his interest in color while placing greater emphasis on ease. Rag & Bone announced him as head of menswear design in January 2024, following the start of his work with the company in September 2023. His departure was confirmed in December 2025.
In a 2026 interview with RISD, Geller described a sensibility informed by Europe, New York and his production relationships in Japan. “Having your own brand is like driving a little speedboat,” he said, recalling the freedom to change direction and follow his moods. He contrasted that independence with the wider responsibilities of a larger company. His career has tested a personal understanding of fabric and fit at both scales, from the intimate world of an independent label to a business serving many kinds of daily life.
