Paul Surridge
Paul Surridge is a British fashion designer whose career has moved from the disciplined world of menswear into the more overt glamour of Roberto Cavalli. His work approaches dress through proportion and the demands of use, with a designer’s attention to how an idea survives contact with a real wardrobe.
Surridge studied at Central Saint Martins before building experience at Calvin Klein and Burberry. He subsequently became head menswear designer at Jil Sander under Raf Simons, working inside a studio identified with exacting shape and material. In 2011, he took creative leadership at Z Zegna, developing a more metropolitan proposition within the Italian tailoring group.
“Our customer is fashion aware, but he isn’t a fashionista,” Surridge told Interview in May 2013. “He sees clothing as an investment, not as his sole priority.” The distinction informed his treatment of tailoring, where a new silhouette had to retain a reason to be worn. Later consultancy work at Acne Studios placed that experience inside another kind of contemporary wardrobe.
Roberto Cavalli appointed Surridge creative director in 2017. His first collection arrived that September, giving him a short preparation period to translate a house associated with sensual dress into his own terms. Speaking to Vogue at the time, he explained how menswear had taught him to listen to a customer’s needs and balance expression with function. He left Cavalli in 2019. The chapter demonstrated the range of his background, testing a pragmatic approach to clothing against a label whose identity was built around display.
