Milan Vukmirovic is a fashion designer, photographer and editor whose career brings the presentation of clothes into close contact with their creation. Born in France to a Serbian family, he entered the industry through magazines and retail. His later design roles drew on that experience of choosing an image and understanding the customer it might reach.

After leaving fashion studies for an internship at Le Jardin des Modes, Vukmirovic helped establish Colette, which opened in Paris in 1997. Its mix of fashion with other cultural objects gave buying the character of an editorial exercise. He subsequently worked at Gucci during Tom Ford’s tenure, then took creative leadership at Jil Sander. The moves carried a buyer’s eye into the development of a collection.

At Trussardi, which he joined in 2007, his responsibilities extended across clothing and image-making. He also helped launch The Webster in Miami, while his magazine work included L’Officiel Hommes and the book-format Fashion for Men. Ports 1961 appointed him to lead menswear in 2014, with his first collection presented for fall-winter 2015. His work for the label joined an accessible sportswear vocabulary with the finish of luxury clothing.

In his September 2009 conversation with Aaron Young for Interview, Vukmirovic explained how one creative outlook could extend across different professions. “In the end, it’s about vision and choosing the right things to fulfill that vision,” he said. Photography was a particular passion, even as he resisted limiting himself to one occupation. Designing the clothes and constructing the world around them have been connected activities, allowing one visual outlook to move through the studio, the store and the magazine.
