Zadig & Voltaire

Zadig & Voltaire was founded in Paris in 1997 by Thierry Gillier. Its name joins the writer Voltaire with the title of his philosophical tale Zadig, giving the French label a literary reference beneath its rock-influenced image. Knitwear, especially cashmere, helped establish an approach to luxury clothing built around casual use.

Menswear extended that identity into a wardrobe of leather jackets and denim, with soft knits supplying a quieter counterpoint. The appeal lay in how these pieces could be worn together, letting expensive materials share space with the clothes associated with gigs and city nights. The brand developed accessories and fragrance alongside ready-to-wear.

Cecilia Bönström became artistic director in 2006 and helped shape the label over nearly two decades. After her departure in 2024, Gillier resumed creative control. Dan Sablon was appointed creative director in 2026, bringing experience across design, styling, and fashion publishing to the Paris house.

Zadig & Voltaire’s men’s collections belong to the meeting point of contemporary French fashion and rock dress. The clothes rely on recognizable wardrobe forms, from a biker jacket to a printed shirt, with the tension between softness and toughness giving the label its identity. Its history reflects the growing place of casual clothing within the language of luxury.
