Steve Madden founded his namesake footwear company in New York in 1990 with an investment of $1,100. Working from a Queens factory, he built a business that connected shoe design with the changing tastes of the street. The label’s New York origins and interest in music helped establish an accessible approach to fashion footwear.

The company developed through an ability to translate emerging looks into shoes for a broad audience. Its men’s collections extend that approach across casual and dress footwear, with sneakers and boots sharing space with loafers. The emphasis falls on the role a shoe can play in changing the character of an outfit.

A public listing in 1993 marked an early stage in the company’s expansion. The business subsequently grew beyond footwear into handbags and other accessories, while the Steve Madden name remained closely associated with its founder. Its headquarters in Long Island City preserve a connection to the New York borough where it began.

The wider company has also expanded through acquisitions, including Kurt Geiger in 2025. Within that larger business, the namesake label retains its focus on translating fashion into everyday products. For menswear, it offers footwear that moves between street-influenced casual dress and the more formal demands of a working wardrobe.
