Jerry Lorenzo founded Fear of God in 2013 in Los Angeles. He funded it himself and kept the brand independent of investors and industry backing. The first run drew from his Christian faith, classic rock shirts, and American sports culture. The name comes from Oswald Chambers’ devotional My Utmost for His Highest.

Early coverage tagged the label as American streetwear often described as contemporary luxury. The description stuck. Oversized hoodies, distressed flannels, and elongated tees made their way onto Justin Bieber’s Purpose tour and into Kanye West’s orbit through Virgil Abloh.

Menswear is the core of the house. The spring-summer 2015 collection, known as the Fourth Collection, introduced elevated basics. These included oversized hoodies, relaxed trousers, and minimalist tees in French terry and wool blends. It set the tone for the brand’s signature look.

Later collections expanded the vocabulary. Collarless double-breasted jackets, drawstring wool trousers, suede shirt-jackets, and long mohair coats appeared in navy, cream, gray, and black.

The 2020 collaboration with Ermenegildo Zegna placed the label against heritage Italian tailoring. Over 95 percent of the fabrics came from Zegna’s mills. The silhouette ran one to three inches wider at the shoulder than standard Zegna cuts. That partnership, alongside Lorenzo’s work with Nike and later Adidas, positioned Fear of God alongside Rick Owens, Helmut Lang reissues, and the post-Abloh wave of American designers reshaping menswear.

The business has expanded along several tracks. In 2018, Lorenzo introduced Fear of God Essentials, a companion line that extended his creative vision. It became the brand’s volume engine through wholesale partners like PacSun and SSENSE.

A performance and sportswear division, Fear of God Athletics, served as a dedicated third pillar through a five-year partnership with Adidas. Announced in 2020 and delayed in production until late 2023, the collaboration concluded at the end of December 2025 by mutual agreement. The house has since returned its focus to the mainline luxury offering.

Lorenzo remains founder and creative director. The brand operates from Los Angeles and shows on its own schedule outside the Paris calendar. Fear of God now stands as one of the few American labels to go global in recent years. It dresses musicians, athletes, and a customer who wants tailoring and sweats from the same closet.
