Scotch & Soda was founded in 1985 by 24-year-old entrepreneur Laurens Hompes. He launched the men’s wholesale brand on his own in Amsterdam. The proposition was straightforward. Hompes wanted to bring directional and affordable styles to the market, drawing from global influences to create accessible fashion.
The operation began modestly, with the first wholesale office parked in an alleyway. In its early years, the label was understood, in the words of one industry write-up, as “a casual menswear brand inspired by American workwear and European tailoring.” That description stuck as the company moved from supplier into something with its own identity.
Menswear remained the core for the first decade and a half. The design language that emerged was eclectic by Dutch standards. Signature elements included playful prints and relaxed silhouettes that encouraged personal styling. Shirting, denim, and layered separates formed the backbone of the offer.
The denim line, Amsterdams Blauw, took its name from the Dutch word for blue. Launched officially in 2010, it became a key part of the brand’s portfolio. Each season worked with unexpected washes, prints, and fabrics such as Japanese selvedge, organic cotton, and raw denim.
Where peers like Diesel pushed Italian denim provocation and G-Star pulled toward technical workwear, Scotch & Soda sat closer to a print-driven, mix-and-match sensibility.
The brand was acquired and relaunched in 2001 by a new team: Eric Bijlsma, Joep Krouwels, and Patrick Munsters. They gave it its signature mix of classic tailoring, global inspiration, and eclectic styling. That reset defined how the menswear was understood commercially through the 2000s. By the time the company was sold in 2011 to Kellwood and Sun Capital Partners, it was already an international brand.
The first brick-and-mortar stores opened in 2008. Growth under private equity ownership then became steep and uneven over the next decade. The brand became a global name, operating more than 200 stores and entering major fashion capitals including London, Paris, and New York. Its use of color and pattern stood out in a market dominated by minimalism.
The model strained. Scotch & Soda had been struggling since June 2022. Private equity investor Sun European Partners, which took a stake in the label in 2011, declined to provide further cash. The business filed for bankruptcy in March 2023, citing severe cash flow issues from the domino effect of the pandemic, the war in Ukraine, and inflation. Managing director Frederik Lukoff stepped down at the bankruptcy filing and exited before the new owners took over.
On May 11, 2023, brand management firm Bluestar Alliance completed the acquisition of the company. Anthony Lucia was named global president of Bluestar Alliance’s Scotch & Soda USA and Global Business Operation. He arrived with over 25 years running U.S. and global fashion brands including Hugo Boss, G-Star Raw, and Escada.
The brand then suffered a second, localized European retail bankruptcy in mid-2024, driven by post-takeover logistical hurdles. Dozens of stores temporarily closed across Germany, the Netherlands, and Belgium.
The recovery was quick. By early 2026, Scotch & Soda had engineered a retail comeback, scaling back up to roughly 90 brick-and-mortar locations across London, Germany, France, Belgium, and a renewed push at home in the Netherlands.
Today, the label sits in the contemporary tier of the market. Bluestar describes its customer as “a younger, fashion-conscious consumer who appreciates fine craftsmanship and attention to detail.” Menswear, denim, and accessories remain organized around the Amsterdam studio that defined its look.
