Haider Ackermann
Haider Ackermann
Founder: Haider Ackermann
Established: 2001
Concluded: 2020
Headquarters: Paris, France
Haider Ackermann launched in Paris in 2002, founded by the Colombian-born, Antwerp-trained designer of the same name. The proposition was shaped by his childhood between Ethiopia, Chad, Algeria, France, and the Netherlands, then filtered through the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp. The first women’s collection showed at Paris Fashion Week for fall-winter 2002, and Suzy Menkes singled the work out as a rare hope for the future.
The design language stayed consistent across the label’s run. Draped tailoring cut on the bias, asymmetric construction, and contrasting fabrications layered into a single silhouette. Jackets came close through the shoulder and released into draped panels, trousers ran high-waisted, and leather and silk layered against heavier wools in palettes of plum, oxblood, and bronze.
The studio took on backing from Anne Chapelle’s Belgian group BVBA 32 in 2005, the same group behind Ann Demeulemeester. Ackermann took the Swiss Textile Award in 2004 with its €100,000 prize handed over by Raf Simons. Menswear arrived in 2011 through a guest slot at Pitti Immagine, and the house shifted to co-ed shows for spring-summer 2019. BVBA 32 split the business into a separate entity in 2013 as the label’s prominence grew.
The work placed the house inside the Antwerp lineage of Dries Van Noten and Ann Demeulemeester, while drawing constant comparisons to Yves Saint Laurent. Karl Lagerfeld made the placement explicit when he told Numéro in 2010 that Ackermann was the only person he could see succeeding him at Chanel. The Fashion Group International Award for Design followed in 2012.
The label collapsed in 2020 after Chapelle pulled financial backing in the wake of major losses. Ackermann spent the next years in legal proceedings to recover control of his own trademarked name. The closure ended a chapter that defined a particular strain of Paris-by-way-of-Antwerp design grounded in bias-cut tailoring, asymmetric construction, and color-blocked layering.
