Simon Spurr
Simon Spurr is a British fashion designer whose career connects English tailoring with the wardrobes of American brands. His namesake work brought close-cut suits into dialogue with denim, making formal and casual pieces part of one proposition. Later creative-director roles extended that approach across heritage clothing and contemporary retail.
Spurr worked at Yves Saint Laurent before moving through Calvin Klein and Ralph Lauren. At Ralph Lauren, his responsibilities included Purple Label and the development of Black Label, giving him experience in two different expressions of luxury menswear. The work required a precise understanding of how a change in proportion or finish could distinguish a collection while retaining the larger company’s identity.
He established his own business in 2006, initially developing the Spurr proposition before expanding into the Simon Spurr designer collection. The label’s appeal depended on how easily tailoring and sportswear could sit together. Recognition included CFDA menswear nominations in 2011 and 2012 and a Fashion Group International Rising Star Award in 2012. He left the namesake company that year.
Subsequent roles included creative leadership at Kent & Curwen, Eidos and 7 For All Mankind, alongside the footwear project March NYC. “To make a perfect T-shirt is hard–all you have is white cotton and fit,” Spurr told Interview in December 2009. “That’s where experience comes in.” The observation explains a continuity across those different businesses. Whether the starting point is a tailored jacket or a pair of jeans, his design depends on the small decisions that determine how a man feels in his clothes.
