Todd Snyder founded his namesake label in 2011 in New York City, drawing on Savile Row tailoring, vintage military clothing, and American workwear. The proposition was straightforward, an American menswear line that read like a haberdashery brought into the present, shaped by his years designing at Polo Ralph Lauren, Gap, and J.Crew.
The first collection launched in fall 2011 at Bergdorf Goodman, Ron Herman, and Neiman Marcus. Early on, GQ called him “The Man Who Taught Men To Love Clothes” and described his New York flagship as “The Menswear Temple We’ve Been Waiting For.”
Menswear is the whole brand, not a department within it. The collections work through suiting, sport coats, denim, and outerwear, with custom and made-to-measure programs running alongside the seasonal line.
Snyder’s designs combine classic American tailoring with modern, playful twists, an approach that has produced collaborations with Champion, New Balance, and Timex. Culturally, the label sits in the same conversation as J.Crew under Mickey Drexler and the heritage Americana wave that included Michael Bastian and Billy Reid, while sharing a Ralph Lauren lineage many of those designers came from.
Snyder has won GQ’s Best Menswear Designers in America, been recognized four times by the CFDA as a Menswear Designer of the Year nominee, and was a 2013 CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund finalist.
The business changed shape in late 2015, when American Eagle purchased the Todd Snyder clothing brand and Snyder’s Tailgate line of vintage-inspired collegiate sportswear for $11 million. Under that ownership, the brand scaled through direct retail.
Snyder remains at the creative helm, and also serves as creative director of Woolrich Black Label. Today, the label dresses a customer who wants designed American menswear at a price point below the European houses, with tailored clothing remaining the brand’s most popular category, alongside growing interest in sneakers and other footwear.
