Timo Weiland emerged in New York in 2009, founded by Timo Weiland, Alan Eckstein, and Donna Kang. An early neckwear project developed into ready-to-wear for men and women, with the spring-summer 2010 collection introducing the label’s broader wardrobe. The founders brought different backgrounds to a shared interest in American clothing and the city’s overlapping creative scenes.
Its menswear joined preppy references to the less formal habits of New York life. Tailoring sat alongside knitwear and sportswear, with unexpected fabric combinations giving recognizable garments a different character. Music and nightlife helped shape the attitude, but the clothes remained grounded in things a man could wear beyond the runway.
The label participated in the CFDA Fashion Incubator’s 2012-2014 class and developed a capsule collection with Banana Republic in 2016. That project translated its approach for a wider audience while retaining an interest in American manufacturing. Following a pause, the designers returned with a fall-winter 2020 menswear collection.
The menswear line is now inactive. Its archive records a particular moment in New York design, when young labels were finding new connections between the tailored wardrobe and streetwear. Timo Weiland’s version allowed color, texture, and a slightly offbeat sense of proportion to interrupt the conventions of American prep.
