Kenneth Cole
Kenneth Cole
Kenneth Cole began in New York in 1982 with a footwear collection and an unconventional way to show it. Founder Kenneth Cole obtained a film permit to park a truck near the city’s shoe market, naming his business Kenneth Cole Productions in the process. The episode established a relationship between product and communication that would become central to the brand.
Footwear supplied the foundation for a broader approach to city dressing. Men’s shoes addressed the distance between formal and casual settings, while the later clothing collections offered a wardrobe built around the demands of urban life. Tailoring and leather jackets could sit alongside sportswear, giving a man different ways to dress for the same working day.
Advertising became another recognizable part of Kenneth Cole’s identity. Wordplay and social commentary gave the campaigns a voice beyond the products themselves, while the founder’s involvement in HIV/AIDS awareness connected the business to issues rarely discussed in fashion advertising at the time. The name became associated with a point of view as well as an appearance.
The label expanded into accessories and fragrance, with Kenneth Cole New York and Reaction expressing different parts of its offer. Footwear remains a point of reference within that wider business. Its enduring proposition connects a practical wardrobe to the pace of New York, treating fashion as part of a life lived in public.
