Issey Miyake

Issey Miyake grew from Miyake Design Studio, established in Tokyo in 1970. The Japanese designer presented his first collection in 1971, beginning an investigation into the relationship between cloth and the body. Fabric development became central to the house, with technology serving the practical experience of wearing clothes.

The launch of Issey Miyake Men in 1976 gave that research a dedicated menswear expression. Shape, volume, and movement offered alternatives to conventional tailoring, allowing garments to take form around the wearer. A jacket could be understood through its construction and the space it created, as much as through the rules of a suit.

Pleating became one of the house’s defining techniques. Homme Plissé Issey Miyake, launched in 2013, brought a lightweight, washable pleated wardrobe to men, giving sculptural shapes an everyday purpose. Its jackets and trousers move with the body, joining visual experimentation to ease of use.

IM Men, introduced in 2021, extends the company’s research into materials and construction. Alongside the main Issey Miyake collection, directed by Satoshi Kondo since the spring-summer 2020 season, these distinct lines continue the founder’s central question of what a piece of cloth can become. The result is a fashion house whose identity begins with making fabric and follows it into daily life.
